Turtle Doves’ company ethics bear fruit with Green Apple international environmental award

We are always proud when one of our clients is honoured for excellence and it doesn’t get much bigger than the latest accolade.
Turtle Doves, a small design and manufacturing company specialising in creating garments from recycled cashmere, has just picked up an international environmental award, won last year by Marks and Spencer.
Founder Kate Holbrook travelled to the Houses of Parliament knowing Turtle Doves was in line for a Green Apple accolade of sorts but wasn’t prepared for the shock of picking up a gold award.
The honour was all the more surprising when the nominees in the Wholesale and Retail category included people from South Korea, Brazil and Malaysia.
“When they said ‘Turtle Doves’ the rest was a blur,” admitted Kate. “It was the icing on the cake.
“We couldn’t believe it to be honest.”
Turtle Doves started back in 2009 when Kate had the idea to produce wrist warmers which doubled up as fingerless gloves.
From the fledgling success at the local school fair to flying off the shelf at markets in Shrewsbury, the once cottage enterprise’s products are now stocked in more than 170 shops in the UK and some overseas.
The Turtle Doves operation moved into a new studio in 2014 as demand grew which included supplying Friends of the Earth and Amnesty International with their own recycled cashmere range. English Heritage has also become a client.
A team of 18 now produce a range of clothing including gloves, hats, scarfs, ponchos and throws for children and adults from cut-up jumpers bought from charity shops.
Their success and company ethics have now been celebrated in the Green Apple Environment Awards, the annual international campaign to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.
The company has grown fast through word of mouth but now Turtle Doves are focusing on digital media to promote their growing reputation and potential for new products such as silk sarees.
“We have been planning for this, stock building, working very hard on our website search engine optimisation and how we reach out to people. It’s a big team effort,” Kate said proudly.
“We are always trying to be innovative. We have a new style of fingerless gloves we’ve been working on.”
The original recycled gloves are still their best seller – a perfect fit for continued success.
