Client profile: Mentor Media Training – Dave Mason
- Looking to fund a management buyout to own the training division separated from the wider digital agency in 2019
- “Pension-led funding is by far and away for me, the better risk option than owing large sums to a bank or putting your home up as security – which I was not prepared to consider, even for a relatively steady business like ours.”
As we all began working from home and communicating with family, colleagues, and clients through a screen (some of us for the first time) it became essential to keep up with the latest technology and tips within the video conferencing space.
Enter Dave Mason, Managing Director of Mentor Media Training.
Mentor Media Training offer a variety of courses including E-learning communications skills, presentation, video conferencing, and social media training.
Like many businesses in 2020, Mentor Media Training responded to the rapidly developing situation by adapting the business model, quickly.
“This could have been a very daunting prospect. I was effectively running a start-up business with my time split between delivery and business admin. Mentor has run media, crisis communications and presentation training courses in rooms with people, for 23 years, so ripping up physical in-person coaching, did come with some early nerves” remembers Dave.
But as the world began to change their workflow and presentations, from internal organisation communications to live interviews and client meetings all being conducted via people’s laptops, Dave noticed the demand created for a new type of competency – effective delivery and visual presentation over video.
“We were soon back in business and it’s been booming, as firms realise, they need to proactively deliver their messages better, with more compassion, more humanity, in a digestible way, whilst not looking as though they’re presenting themselves from their shoe cupboard!” he said.
Looking to fund a management buyout to own the training division separated from the wider digital agency in 2019, Dave found Pension-led funding to be the key to the door of his business success.
“I had already started asking around and talking to entrepreneur friends about cash investment, but in my heart, I didn’t want to give away so much equity in the business, that I’d effectively still be working for someone else…
Pension-led funding offered the freedom to determine my own destiny
“if you know your business model inside and do your research, believe that it has a future and have the capacity to work hard to make it a success, then Pension-led funding presents an exciting prospect” Dave continued.
Ensuring control of the business, Dave was now able to adapt Mentor Media Training to the new all-digital landscape in 2020.
“Pension-led funding is by far and away for me, the better risk option than owing large sums to a bank or putting your home up as security – which I was not prepared to consider, even for a relatively steady business like ours.”
Offering some quick tips to help improve your working from a home setup, Dave suggests that, “you can start by simply by improving people’s default position of looking down at the camera on their laptop. It is awful looking up their noses and at their cobwebbed ceilings!”
Dave continues, “While it seems like common sense, professionalising your home surroundings has been very important for personal presentation style and corporate reputation management. Getting these basics wrong risks losing your message to the audience entirely and damaging both your personal and organisational brand.”
